What’s worse than getting into your car with a hot date and their car smells like dirty gym clothes and last night’s kimchi? Not much.  It’s as bad as forgetting a pile of dirty underwear or accumulating rotting food in the backseat. Either way, it will  leave your car reeking of a gross, unwanted smell.

And even though this doesn’t happen every time you get in your car, the dreaded stench can sometimes linger for days. Rather than paying for a costly cleaning service, here’s a basic guide from TikTok’ers to help you tackle the odor problem.

how to make car smell good

1. Wax melt

It’s incredible how Jasmin Kimani manipulates two-inch-long talons without breaking a sweat. But what blew peoples’ minds is how the TikTok content creator can mask the unpleasant odor of her hot Texas car with wax melts and a silicone cup. To try this hack to make your car smell good, opt for scented wax melts that smell heavenly. Place them in a vented jar, and shove them into your car. You’ll be glad you did.  Get wax melts here. 2. Fragrance oil

Here’s another DIY car-deodorizing hack from PopSugar that keeps the interior smelling good. For this tip, focus on spreading the aroma using a spray bottle and Better Homes and Gardens plug-in fragrance oil normally used in home diffusers. With no artificial scents or unpleasant residue, the oil provides a faint, pleasant smell for under $30. It’s reusable, so just add a small amount to some water in a spray bottle and you’re off to a great start. Grab diffuser oil here. Get your spray bottle here

3. Fragrance diffuser

Another popular trick to make your car smell good uses a popular and easy-to-find product. Now we want to warn you, this is a good option while the car is parked. You may need to remove the oil diffuser while driving as it can spill. So to give your car a fragrant touch, you’ll need to get a fragrance diffuser that uses perfume to give off a fresh scent. For less than $30, you can find a unit from Amazon that continuously releases a steady stream of floral notes or broadcasts aromatic molecules at regular intervals. Just remove it before operating your motor vehicle.

4. Booster beads

Itsari_B, a popular TikTok user and beauty advisor, gives her car smell a jolt of freshness by using a common cleaning product available at Dollar Tree. Get a pack of laundry booster beads with adhesive pads and stick them anywhere in the car, with extra concentration on the stinky areas. A small glass shaker jar with perforations is needed to hold the beads and maintain the smelly goodness during the trip. Click here to get laundry booster beads and a glass jar to place them in here

5. Aerosol spray

If you want your car to smell good – go beyond a box of tissues and a deodorant stick with this ingenious trick from TikTok user @l3litta. The idea is simple – eliminate lingering stench using commercial-grade Meguiar’s aerosol spray. Before heading out, set the ventilation system to recirculate, adjust the air conditioning to high, remove the cap, and position the spray can behind the front seat with the doors closed. Switch off the AC when you open the doors to get in, discard the can, and leave the windows rolled down to let in the fresh air. You can grab a can of  Meguiar’s here
