Matthew Mitcham, born Matthew John Mitcham on 2 March 1988 in Brisbane, Queensland, is a retired Australian Olympic diver who became the first openly gay man to win an Olympic gold medal. He took the 10 m platform title at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with what was then the highest-scoring single dive in Olympic history. Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, he retired from competition in 2016 and launched an OnlyFans account that went publicly live in February 2023.
Mitcham was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1988 and now lives in Sydney, New South Wales. He stands 5’9″ (174 cm) and holds the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his sporting achievements.
His athletic career began not in diving but in trampolining. He won the double mini-tramp event at the World Junior Championships in both 1999 and 2001 before being recruited into diving, where the aerial awareness developed on the trampoline transferred directly.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Mitcham won gold in the 10 m platform. His final dive scored the highest single-dive total in Olympic history at the time, a mark now second-highest. The result made him the first Australian male diving gold medallist since Dick Eve in 1924.
He also became the first openly gay man to win an Olympic gold medal, having come out before the Games rather than after. He went on to take bronze in the 1 m springboard at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships and gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He retired from competition in 2016.
Mitcham has spoken publicly and in detail about depression, self-harm and past methamphetamine use, subjects he documented in his memoir. The candour was unusual for an Olympic champion writing close to the peak of a career.
He has since worked as a public speaker on mental health and LGBTQ+ topics, and performs cabaret, which combines his performance background with a second stage career. He married Luke Rutherford in 2020; they divorced in 2024.
Mitcham created an OnlyFans account in November 2022 and made it publicly known in February 2023, priced at $10 per month. He was among the earliest retired Olympians to join the platform openly.
In an extended interview with PinkNews in February 2026, he framed the account as an exercise in creator autonomy and as a direct rebuttal to shame around queer athletes’ bodies. His argument echoed that made by other athlete-creators, including Robbie Manson, who has been similarly public about the platform’s role in funding an athletic career.
Mitcham has roughly 58,000 Instagram followers at @matthewmitcham88 and maintains an account on X at @matthew_mitcham. His OnlyFans operates at onlyfans.com/matthewmitcham.
His following is modest by creator standards but is concentrated and highly engaged, drawn from Olympic sport, the Australian LGBTQ+ community and his speaking and cabaret audiences rather than from viral social growth.
His full name is Matthew John Mitcham. He competes and publishes under that name.
He was born on 2 March 1988, making him 38 years old. His zodiac sign is Pisces.
He was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and lives in Sydney, New South Wales.
