Shea Couleé

Shea Coulée, born Jaren Kyei Merrell on February 8, 1989 in Warsaw, Indiana, is an American drag performer, recording artist, actor and designer who won RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season five in 2020. Coulée first came to international attention on season nine of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2017, finishing in the top four as one of the season’s frontrunners. Out of drag, Coulée uses they/them pronouns. They are based in Los Angeles and release music through their own Haus Down label.

Merrell was born in Warsaw, Indiana in 1989 and later moved to Chicago, where they earned a BFA from Columbia College Chicago. The formal design training is visible in their drag: Coulée constructs much of their own couture rather than commissioning it, a distinction frequently noted in coverage of their runway looks.

They began performing in drag in Chicago in 2012 and quickly became a fixture of the city’s alternative drag scene, which prizes conceptual and art-driven performance over pageant convention. That local reputation preceded their national television debut by five years.
